it will play most games, and is a very powerful machine. However, if you want to play the latest games you'll need a really top end graphics card such as the nVidia 9700.

Yes you can, external hard drives are universal and work off a USB port. The same goes for the ram which is generally Kingston anyway but the graphics card is fixed and unable to be upgraded. Hope this helps.
